Tom Boonen wins Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne for the third time
The first weekend of March has opened the Belgian cobbled classics with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on Saturday and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne on Sunday.
Yesterday, for the third time in his career (2007, 2009 and 2014), Tom Boonen, crossed the finish line in Kuurne first. He over-took Moreno Hofland (Belkin) in the very last meters and beat him by a few centimeters. Bonnen and his teammates, on SRAM RED 22, showed remarkable control throughout the race, and once again outstanding early season fitness.
Omega Pharma – Quick-Step Pro Cycling and Belkin-Pro Cycling teams controlled the race, and with 70 kilometers to go the peloton caught up the early breakaway. Shortly after, Boonen, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, Matteo Trentin, Nikolas Maes and Stijn Vandenbergh (OPQS), Sep Vanmarcke, Maarten Wynants and Moreno Hofland (Belkin), Johan Van Summeren (Garmin) and Yves Lampaert (Topsport) escaped from the group and set a lead of over a minute, the 10-man breakaway was not to be caught. Boonen opened his Flanders’ campaign with a strong victory and the third of his 2014 season.
In a battle waged over 197km at, rider’s must know their strengths and weaknesses. Boonen’s power is measured by his Quarq for Specialized power meter, it is his tool for training and is his measure for winning. Congrats to Boonen and his teammates.
